About
Rob Bustin
I was blessed with the opportunity of being totally submersed in the outdoor lifestyle, from birth.
Every summer the Robson Valley and Jasper National Park were my playground, since my family purchased land in the Tete Jaune Cache area in 1967. We were from Edmonton, but we spent all of our summers in the Shangri-la known as T-John.
All we ever did was fish, ride motorbikes, and play Huck Finn in paradise all summer long. I wanted to do it for a living, from the time I was in short pants.
My dad and I fished so much that I can barely even eat Rainbow Trout anymore, since that's pretty much all that we consumed. I lived on Rainbow Trout from the Fraser River all summer long. We would mix it up though, and every once in awhile head out to Jasper and try our luck there.
We would always go to the same tackle shop, On-Line Sport and Tackle, and rent boats and talk tall tails with Mike Meriliovich, the owner. We got our pictures on the wall of fame and I always wanted to live that life, the life of a fishing guide.
At 19, I made the move to Jasper and worked 5 years for On-Line Sport & Tackle. I was living the dream, I was taking people fishing, writing about fishing in the paper, and in my free time, going fishing!
During that stint, I spent two years in the off-season getting my Outdoor Recreation Management Diploma from Capilano College in Vancouver. It was awesome! I spent all my college time developing my business, Bustin' Trout.
In 1998, after I got my diploma, I started Bustin' Trout . I have never looked back. Now I have the kind of life that most people can only dream about, I TAKE PEOPLE FISHING FOR A LIVING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why I am a fishing guide?
I like to share the experience of my paradise with
people from all over the world. This is the best way
to teach people about wildlife, fishing, and a good
time, I like to spread the fishing bug!
Rob, the college professor.
Seven years ago Wendy Dyson approached me on behalf of the College of New Caledonia (www.cnc.bc.ca), based in Prince George B.C., to do what I love to do: teach people to fish. Of course, I said yes. And now, every May, I spend the whole month teaching students about the thing I live for, fishing! I am an instructor in the popular Northern Outdoor Recreation & Ecotourism Program, in Valemount, B.C. My students’ final test is to take a complete beginner on a fishing trip. They have one day to teach these rookies how to flyfish. I stand back and watch them succeed.
